This is an original watercolor by Janet Wissmann. The little wolf cub was one of a litter of seven at the Timberwolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist Janet Wissmann had the opportunity to sit inside an enclosure with this litter of cubs on a delightful Saturday afternoon. "As I watched them, one of the things that surprised me was how well-developed their social interactions were at this young age! The cub was only eight weeks old, yet he howled with all his might when he heard the siren of a distant fire truck." Unlike dogs, wolf cubs are always born in the spring. And they grow so quickly! This little wolf cub has just awoken from a nap amidst a garden of spring wildflowers! Here the wolf cub is shown with large-flowered trillim and wild ginger. Two lady fern fronds at the back echo the shape of the cub's ears. Image size is ~14x19 inches. This little guy, with his huge ears and alert expression, intrigued me from the start. He had the most vivid markings and colorings of all the cubs in the litter. These features prompted me to paint him with a springtime wildflower that has spikey leaves: the Jack-in-the-pulpit.  I arranged the leaves and flower in such a manner as to accentuate the cub's very large ears.; I added the dog-toothed violets because they are one of my favorites."
