Original Watercolor Painting for Sale -- wolves
Creams, rusts, grays, browns, blues, blacks . . . such are
the colors beckoning a watercolor artist! Every hair on this winter
wolf puts forth colors of the earth's rainbow. A dictionary describes
"agouti" as the grizzled color of fur resulting from the barring of each
hair in several alternate dark and light bands. This painting truly
captures the rainbow of a wolf's colors.
You can see how the transparent watercolor strokes are layered and how
this technique adds to the sense of depth and richness in a wolf's fur.

The Gathering Call
is a beautiful transparent watercolor painting depicting three of the
timber wolves Janet Wissmann met at the Timberwolf Preservation
Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist writes,
"I had the pleasure
of watching, photographing, and painting these wolves several times,
and each time I visited I was amazed at their sheer size and power. A
timber wolf is big! They are tall and lanky, very solid, and their
strength and power are not immediately noticeable. During my visit I
was instructed to extend the back of my hand outward so that the
wolves could smell me and become acquainted. What happened next was a
bit disconcerting: they began to growl and tumble and posture with one
another in what seemed like a threatening manner only one foot away
from me. I was assured by the caretaker that they were simply arguing
with one another as to who would get the choice position while
'visiting' with me, but neither his assurances nor my own knowledge of
wolf behavior had me convinced. I was at that moment in time quite
pleased that there was a chain-link fence between us!"

This print is from an original watercolor by Janet Wissmann. The little wolf cub was one of a litter of seven at the Timberwolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist Janet Wissmann had the opportunity to sit inside an enclosure with this litter of cubs on a delightful Saturday afternoon. "As I watched them, one of the things that surprised me was how well-developed their social interactions were at this young age! The cub was only eight weeks old, yet he howled with all his might when he heard the siren of a distant fire truck." Image size is 14x19 inches, with additional ample margins. Watercolorist Janet Wissmann explains how this painting took shape: "Wolf cubs don't miss a thing! This little guy, with his huge ears and alert expression, intrigued me from the start. He had the most vivid markings and colorings of all the cubs in the litter. These features prompted me to paint him with a springtime wildflower that has spikey leaves: the Jack-in-the-pulpit. I the arranged the leaves and flower in such a manner as to accentuate the cub's very large ears.; I added the dog-toothed violets because they are one of my favorites." The Gathering Call
is a beautiful transparent watercolor painting depicting three of the
timber wolves Janet Wissmann met at the Timberwolf Preservation
Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist writes,
"I had the pleasure
of watching, photographing, and painting these wolves several times,
and each time I visited I was amazed at their sheer size and power. A
timber wolf is big! They are tall and lanky, very solid, and their
strength and power are not immediately noticeable. During my visit I
was instructed to extend the back of my hand outward so that the
wolves could smell me and become acquainted. What happened next was a
bit disconcerting: they began to growl and tumble and posture with one
another in what seemed like a threatening manner only one foot away
from me. I was assured by the caretaker that they were simply arguing
with one another as to who would get the choice position while
'visiting' with me, but neither his assurances nor my own knowledge of
wolf behavior had me convinced. I was at that moment in time quite
pleased that there was a chain-link fence between us!"

This print is from an original watercolor by Janet Wissmann. The little wolf cub was one of a litter of seven at the Timberwolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist Janet Wissmann had the opportunity to sit inside an enclosure with this litter of cubs on a delightful Saturday afternoon. "As I watched them, one of the things that surprised me was how well-developed their social interactions were at this young age! The cub was only eight weeks old, yet he howled with all his might when he heard the siren of a distant fire truck." Image size is 14x19 inches, with additional ample margins. Unlike dogs, wolf cubs are always born in the spring. And they grow so quickly! This little wolf cub has just awoken from a nap amidst a garden of spring wildflowers! Watercolorist Janet Wissmann explains how this painting took shape: "Wolf cubs don't miss a thing! This little guy, with his huge ears and alert expression, intrigued me from the start. He had the most vivid markings and colorings of all the cubs in the litter. These features prompted me to paint him with a springtime wildflower that has spikey leaves: the Jack-in-the-pulpit. I the arranged the leaves and flower in such a manner as to accentuate the cub's very large ears.; I added the dog-toothed violets because they are one of my favorites."
